A woman is in the hospital with major injuries after a shooting early Wednesday morning in southwest Bakersfield. Witnesses called police shortly before 6:00 a.m. about a man seen in the 4300 block of Sugarcane Avenue with a gun.
A few minutes later another caller reported a woman suffering from a gunshot wound, in a home nearby, on Milo Avenue.
Police arrived and blocked off several streets in the neigborhood off Pacheco and Akers Roads.
Shortly after they say they located the shooter and the gun in a home on Milo. They also found the victim in another home.
"On arrival officers located a female victim of a possible gunshot, in house on 4300 block Milo. A 3-year-old was also located in the residence, uninjured," says Michaela Beard, Bakersfield Police Department.
The toddler is now in protective custody. No word on the woman's current condition. Police say 30-year-old Ruben Cervantes was arrested for 2 counts of attempted homicide, one count of domestic violence and 2 counts of child endangerment. They say the man and woman do know each other, but it's unclear how or what their relationship is to the child.
