Annual fan drive to serve needy seniors

BAKERSFIELD, CA - As the temperature rises so does the need for those in our community to keep cool, which is why KGET is partnering with the Volunteer Center to collect fans Wednesday.

The goal is to provide fans for seniors, the disabled and low-income families and it's all done with the help of the community.

The Volunteer Center said last year 700 people applied for fans. Thanks to the fan drive, the center was able to fulfill all of the requests.

But, volunteers think this year may pose more of a challenge. They say fans are, on average, $6 to $7 more expensive this year. So, the Volunteer Center is still hoping it can keep Kern County cool and so are senior citizens.

"I'd rather be sweating than to turn on my AC because of my bills. But, if I had a fan I could turn it on and just sit in front of it," said Ruth Rede, who needs a fan.

"Because I love senior citizens and they're my heart and my passion, I want to make sure that these seniors are taken care of, that Kern County is known for taking care of their senior citizens," said Elena Rizo, Volunteer Center.

The Volunteer Center is also taking monetary donations which could even be better than a fan. It said with money they're able to go to stores and buy multiple fans at a discount. If you would like to help, you can bring new or used fans or money to our studio Wednesday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. We're at 22nd and L Streets in downtown Bakersfield.

The Volunteer Center will also be taking applications for those in need of fans at the drive.
