BAKERSFIELD, CA - With the warm temperatures, it's nice to cool off with a frozen treat. Frosty Paws, an ice cream line specifically designed for dogs, makes it possible for animals to enjoy a summer snack as well.
Nestle representatives say the Bakersfield operations center is the largest ice cream factory in the world. Two dozen Nestle product lines are made there, including the recent addition of Frosty Paws, creating 26 new full-time jobs.
Bakersfield Operations Center Factory Manager Tim Keating said, "Frosty Paws is a frozen desert treat. We've got two flavors. We've got the original flavor and the peanut butter flavor."
Local dog owner Enedina Huff said, "The first time I gave it to him I thought, 'he's not going to like it,' but actually it's the only thing he will sit for. He's a little stubborn. He'll sit as soon as I go to the freezer, he knows he's getting a Frosty Paws."
Production of Frosty Paws recently moved to the plant creating some new jobs.
Keating said, "In moving the production from co-pack to the site here we were able to save over half a million dollars a year and we also created over 26 full-time employee jobs."
The factory employs more than 1,200 salaried, full-time, and temporary workers. With most employees living in the area, Keating says the plant has huge ties to the community.
"The line itself was just over 6.5 million dollars in capital investments. So Nestle is a firm believer in investing in California and Bakersfield," said Keating.
Something consumers are happy to hear. Huff said, "I think it's great for our economy and for bringing jobs to Bakersfield. That's awesome."
The 26 employees have started working at the factory and the production line is in full swing.
