LEBEC, CA --Evacuations were ordered in a mountainous area near the Grapevine after a brush fire moved close to homes early Friday afternoon.
As of 1 p.m., no structures had been lost and no injuries were reported, but fire equipment from throughout Kern County was moving toward the area and smoke was causing some problems on Interstate 5.
The evacuations were in the 6500 block of Digier Road near the community of Lebec. That’s on the west side of Interstate 5.
One lane of southbound Interstate 5 was closed to accommodate firefighters at the side of the freeway.
Fire equipment from northern Los Angeles County and from the Bakersfield area was rushing to the area. At least three helicopters were headed to the area from Southern California.
Sheriff’s deputies were in the area to assist with evacuations.
KGET has two crews in the area, and will have full coverage on 17News at 5, 6 and 11. Details will be made available on kget.com as they become available.
