BAKERSFIELD - Two pit bulls are quarantined and two small dogs dead after an attack in southwest Bakersfield that sent a pregnant woman to the hospital.

Michelle Markowski says she was walking her two Shih Tzu dogs near Stonecreek Junior High School when she was attacked Monday.

"Looked over and the two pit bulls were just charging us. They got my male first. I just went after him, tried to help him, and they were just ripping his face off," said Markowski.

Markowski is in the first trimester of her pregnancy and called her husband Matt to tell him what happened. He immediately rushed home.

"My wife is covered in blood. My two dogs are screaming at an animal hospital. I immediately had to take my wife to the emergency room. It was really the worst five minutes of my life in a long time," said Matt Markowski.

The unborn baby is okay, but the couple's two dogs had to be put down.

17 News tried to speak with the owners of the pit bulls, but they were unavailable for comment.

The dogs have been placed under quarantine at their owners' home.

Michelle Markowski doesn't think that is good enough.

"At least be removed from the home if not put down. To be that violent and aggressive towards other dogs, they obviously have not been socialized around other dogs," she said.
