Annual Suicide Prevention Walk

Nearly 400 people walked Saturday to raise awareness about suicide prevention at Beach Park.

It was sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The event is called "Out of the Darkness" and is designed to encourage people to talk about a subject that a lot of people find uncomfortable.

"Suicide should not be a taboo word," said Lisa Elie, participant. "It should be an everyday word we use at the dinner table to bring awareness so people don't have to go through this."

Participant Karina Nafarrate said, "Not everyone is alone, we are all here together as a community battling issues like this."

Organizers say it's also important to talk about the warning signs and prevention.

"We know that suicide is the most preventable cause of death that there is," said Ellen Eggert, Chairperson for the walk.

Eggert says if people see warning signs, ask the tough question.

"The biggest myth about suicide is if you ask about it, you are going to put it into someone's head. That is a myth," Eggert said.

During the 4th annual walk, some familiar faces and community leaders spoke to the crowd Saturday as well.

"I hope as you go about your walk this morning and you will reflect on how you can offer further to your community through heart leadership and afford the people that need help," said Harvey Hall, Mayor of Bakersfield.

For some, the pain of losing a loved one to suicide is still fresh, but the walk offered help in knowing they're not alone.

"You know what, we are going to be ok," said Christy Welsh, participant. "We have a great community that we live in. We have a lot of support, a lot of loving people."
