Blue cart recycling is coming to some 40,000 residents of Bakersfield.  Those are residents of the unincorporated or county portions of the greater Bakersfield area.

The Board of Supervisors, late Tuesday evening, voted unanimously to adopt the program.

"I don't like mandatory fees or having to impose new fees, but this is a requirement of Assembly Bill 341 that we're trying to deal with responsibly," said Karen Goh, Fifth District Supervisor.

Supervisors noted that the recycling program is needed to comply with a state mandate that counties divert at least 75% of their solid waste stream to recycling by the year 2020.

The program will add about $36 to the property tax bills of affected customers, and it will start next summer.
