BAKERSFIELD, CA- Bakersfield's first Bicycle Transportation Plan was approved by the city council Wednesday night.
City officials say with the bike plan on track, it can qualify for certain transportation grants in the future.
The plan will also improve infrastructure and safety for bicyclists on local roadways.
The city says there are more than 244 miles of new proposed bikeways, with nearly 100 of those miles intended to be family friendly.
However, many of the bikeways still need further study before they can be built.
