BAKERSFIELD, CA- A 15-year-old girl was hit and killed by a car in East Bakersfield. The California Highway Patrol says she may have been distracted at the time of the crash due to her using headphones.
It happened Tuesday just after 5 p.m. The CHP says the girl was crossing Niles Street from Orange Drive when she was hit by a Honda Sedan heading eastbound.
Officers say the girl, who was wearing headphones and dark clothing, died on scene.
The coroner's office has identified the girl as 15-year-old Caterin Orellana of Bakersfield.
The CHP says at this time, it appears the driver, Jamel Tate, 26, of Bakersfield, will not be facing charges.
Officers say alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
Officers say the investigation is ongoing because they believe possibly two other vehicles struck the girl following the initial impact.
By our count, this is the 34th pedestrian hit and killed in Kern County this year.
There were 26 pedestrians hit and killed in the county last year.
