A head-on collision Tuesday afternoon south of Bakersfield left a northern California man dead and two people seriously injured.
According to a CHP officer at the scene, the driver, Bruce Avery, 60, of Los Altos Hills, was driving westbound on Copus Road in a Chevy Suburban when he veered into the eastbound lane into the path of an oncoming big rig near Schallock Road, just west of Interstate 5.
The vehicles hit head-on. Avery died at the scene.
Avery's female passenger and the man driving the semi, were taken to Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
