BAKERSFIELD, CA -- A woman was killed early Friday in what police described as a suspected DUI crash in south Bakersfield.
The wreck happened around 12:40 a.m. at Fairview Road and Monitor Street, the Bakersfield Police Department reported.
A GMC pickup truck crashed into a Ford Fusion. The driver of the pickup truck, Joseph Maine, 26 of Bakersfield, was traveling westbound on Fairview Road when he struck the Ford, the BPD reported in a news release.
A female passenger in the Ford--Vanessa Carrillo, 25 of Bakersfield--died on scene of injuries from the crash. The driver and another passenger in the car also suffered moderate injuries.
Maine had several prior convictions, according to the Kern Superior Court Website. Maine pleaded no contest to illegal street racing and driving an unregistered vehicle with no insurance in January 2007. In April of that same year, he pleaded no contest to reckless driving. In exchange two misdemeanor DUI charges against him were dropped. And in March 2012 he pleaded no contest to driving on a suspended license.
Maine was arrested Friday morning and booked on charges of driving under the influence causing injury and vehicular manslaughter.
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call Officer Diederich at the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-326-3967.
