BAKERSFIELD, CA - Kern County will pay $8.8 million to two families whose loved ones were hit and killed by a Kern County Sheriff's deputy more than two years ago.
According to Deputy County Counsel Mark Nations, the civil case was settled Friday.
Nations told 17 News, the county will pay the families of 30-year-old Chrystal Jolley and 24-year-old Daniel Hiler $4 million and $4.8 million respectively.
Authorities said Deputy John Swearengin hit and killed Jolley and Hiler with his patrol car in December 2011 as they were pushing Hiler's motorcycle across Norris Road.
The California Highway Patrol, which conducted the investigation, said Swearengin was traveling 80 miles per hour without his lights and sirens on, and Jolley and Hiler were not at fault in the crash.
Nations said the county will be required to pay $2.3 million and the rest will come from the county's insurance company.
The attorney representing the Jolley family said they are satisfied with the civil settlement.
