BAKERSFIELD,CA-- Get well letters hang on Mrs. Lowe's classroom at Sequoia Elementary for 11-year-old Isabel Rodriguez.
"She was always the honor roll student. Never missed school. She was always wanting to jump and climb trees," said Brenda Rodriguez, Isabel's mom.
Her health took a turn for the worse three years ago and is now bedridden.
"She has no use of the right side of her body and very little use of the left side of her body," said Isabel's former teacher Jillayne Lowe.
Three years ago, Isabel's parents noticed she would drag her right foot. So they took her to see a pediatrician and learned she couldn't feel from her right knee down. The doctor's office called the next day with MRI results.
"It was very scary. She didn't really want to call me for the fact that I was doing radiation. At the time, I had cancer," said Rodriguez.
Results showed Isabel had lesions on the left side of her brain. After a brain biopsy, eight MRI's and blood work, doctors don't have a cure or diagnosis. Brenda says white mass is taking over the left side of her daughter's brain.
While Isabel's health continued to deteriorate, Brenda was able to get healthier and went into remission.
But last week her biopsies tested positive for cancer.
School officials say Isabel will soon be moved to hospice care.
"He said weeks, months, may be years . I'm hoping she doesn't go at all. I'm mean, it's my baby," said Rodriguez.
On Thursday, April 10, at Sequoia Elementary, the school will host a dinner and auction from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to help the Rodriguez family with medical expenses.
