Twenty five soldiers returned to Bakersfield from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Tuesday morning.
Friends and family eagerly cheered and waited near the tarmac at Meadows Field for members of the 422nd Military Police Company. The soldiers were deployed for one year.
Margie Cortez searched the crowd smiling, looking for her son, Nick. "Wonderful. We missed him. I don't know why this time, it was more like the wait. I just couldn't wait. I couldn't wait to get him home," she said.
Their plane landed in Bakersfield just after 9 a.m. They were met with many hand shakes and hugs. Sgt. First Class Ricardo Zamora said he hadn't been home or seen his daughter in almost a year. "We are going on leave for the next month, so it's going to be all about family."
Many of the returning soldiers said they were going to use the time to rest up after the year-long deployment.
