We continue to follow the story of a suspect named in a hit-and-run crash that severed a 90-year-old man's leg Monday.

17 News spoke with retired Major William Coffee's son Monday who said surgery for his father was scheduled to start at 5 o'clock. His son told us retired Major Coffee was on his death bed from cancer a year ago, but recovered.

Coffee's son also said his dad was a transport pilot for who flew B-29s for the Army Air Corps during World War II, served in the Korean War, and Vietnam. He also flew crop dusters in between wars.

Coffee's truck isn't working so he had been riding his motorcycle. Coffee's son says his father's thigh was broken and that his dad's left leg was cut off below the knee.

The suspect police are looking for is 33-year-old Juan Armando Cortez. He's described as 5' 9" to 5' 11" tall with a stocky build, black hair, and brown eyes.

Monday's crash happened at the intersection of East Truxtun Avenue and Miller Street.

Officers say Coffee was heading east on East Truxtun Avenue when Cortez hit him in a minivan and didn't stop at the scene.

That minivan was found in a nearby neighborhood.

Cortez is wanted for hit and run causing injury, being an unlicensed driver, having no proof of insurance, and driving with expired registration.
