BAKERSFIELD, CA- A local athlete is counting down the days until he makes his debut at the CrossFit Games in southern California. The games are billed as a premier test to find the fittest athletes on earth. Rafael Guijarro is accepting the challenge.
Lifting weights, pull ups and burpees are three basic components of CrossFit.
Guijarro said, "You do it every day. You squat down to pick up a pencil. You basically, you jump to go get something out of the cupboard. You're doing CrossFit on a daily basis. The difference is you come here and you actually do it with some weights and at a higher intensity."
The owner of CrossFit Frenzy has taken his fitness to another level. The 40-year-old is the only athlete representing Bakersfield at the CrossFit games next week.
He beat out thousands of competitors worldwide, in qualifying rounds.
Guijarro said, "I'm in the masters division. So, the top 20 go to the CrossFit Games, in the world."
Guijarro finished 16th. Next stop, the StubHub Center in Carson.
"How it works is it's about two or three workouts each day and it's a three day competition. At the end of the day, the crown the fittest master man in the world type of thing," he said.
He started training for the competition in April 2013, after not qualifying last year.
Guijarro said, "I basically embraced my weaknesses. I got better at my weaknesses. I tried to make them my strengths."
He says with the support of his wife and the Frenzy family, he's achieved his goal.
"My first thing is to have fun. I'm not concerned about placing, but I am. It's something that I like to keep to myself in a sense. I'm just looking for finishing each workout and basically giving it my all at each one of them."
The CrossFit Games Masters events start Tuesday. What exactly those workouts will include is unknown, until competitors get closer to the competition.
