Friday's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school has local parents wondering what safety and emergency procedures are in place at our local schools.
The Kern High School District police department tells 17 News, emergency management procedures are in place at each high school. Each has one armed school police officer.
Officers with the district say they train regularly with local law enforcement on evacuations, lockdowns, and active shooter procedures.
"Each officer, part of their job requirements is to know their school site like the back of their hand. And, along with the officers assigned to each school site, we also have patrol officers that go to each school site and assist those officers there," said Officer Joe Lopeteguy, KHSD.
We also made calls to the Bakersfield City School District and Greenfield School District to see if they have similar emergency procedures.
Both say their schools do not have on-campus police, but do have emergency procedures in place.
As for the Panama Buena Vista Union School District, the assistant superintendent says there is not a compelling need for on-campus police.
