SHAFTER, CA - A Shafter Animal Control officer is describing a recent case of animal abuse as horrific and inhumane.
Someone pierced a dog's back paw, put a chain through it, and wrapped the chain around the dog's neck so it couldn't use its hind leg. And, this is not the first time the officer has seen cases like this.
The dog is much better then it was when it was found. Now officers want to find its owner and they have plenty of proof and pictures to potentially press charges.
"You can see it's very rusted and this right here is what was embedded into it," said Officer Nick Riddick, Manager of the Shafter Animal Control holding the chain once in the dog's foot.
Officers took pictures of the piercing before removing it last Wednesday.
"And it is completely horrific, torturous, and not only inhumane, but criminal," said Officer Riddick.
"She's a very sweet girl. Its difficult to imagine somebody doing something to such a sweet animal."
The young dog is now safe and given the name Shelby as she's staying with the Bakersfield Pitty Crew Rescue. A week ago, a woman spotted the dog limping through the streets of Shafter.
"She thought the dog had just three legs and, then, as the dog approached her she realized her leg had been tied up around her neck," said Sundee Martineau, of Bakersfield Pitty Crew Rescue.
Officers say a heavy chain was attached to the clip pierced into Shelby's paw and wrapped so tightly around her neck, it was starting to embed in the skin, while making its back leg useless.
"What is sure is that it was intentional. Having seen this type of situation before and having interviewed people who have done this sort of thing before they typically state that they do it to prevent the animal from jumping over a fence," said Officer Riddick.
Officer Riddick says the majority of those owners don't know it's abuse, but he ensures them it is. Now, he'd like to teach whoever did this crime to Shelby, it's against the law to treat animals like they did.
"To see someone deliberately injure a voiceless creature and to do those kind of things is just beyond my comprehension. Call in the authorities. Do something about it. Notify us. And, as the voices get louder, the more that can be done," said Martineau.
