Bike ride to promote new 'three-feet' law

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Bike Bakersfield will be hosting an awareness ride to promote the Three Feet for Safety Act on Tuesday Sept. 16., the same day the law goes into effect.

Members of the community and the organization will meet at 7 a.m. at the Liberty Bell on the southeast corner ofTruxtun Avenue and Chester Avenue. At 7:30 a.m. there will be a short ride through downtown Bakersfield, ending at Dagny’s on 20th and Eye Street.

The “Be Sweet! Give 3 Feet” campaign by Bike Bakersfield urges riders to come out in support of the new Californialaw requiring motorists to give at least three feet when passing a bicyclist.  

”Violators will be charged a base fee of $35, which may jump to $220 if a collision occurred resulting in bodily injury to the bicyclist. If a motorist is unable to safely pass the bicyclist, she must slow to a reasonable speed and wait until it is safe to pass,” according to Bike Bakersfield’s release.

All are welcome to attend.
