Shari Myvett lives at the Bakersfield Homeless Center with her three small children. Her youngest is just 12 days old.
Myvett is new to the country from Belize. She says staying at the homeless shelter is the only way her family can be in the United States while she looks for work.
"It's a better opportunity for my kids to be out here,” Myvett says. “They get opportunities to do different things and a lot of stuff."
Myvett is one of hundreds of people the homeless center serves on a monthly basis and demand is increasing.
"We keep seeing more and more people needing help, so the struggle is meeting demand," says Louis Gill, CEO of the Bakersfield Homeless Center.
Bright House Networks did a “12 Days of Giving” campaign on Facebook, where for 12 days it donated items, such as socks, toothbrushes and baby formula to charities across the U.S.
Since the Bakersfield Homeless Center got the most people to like its Facebook page, it received a huge gift. Bright House cut a $10,000 check.
"Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money," Gill says. “That's a lot of people you can feed. It also could be a whole lot of diapers, or it could just simply mean we're going to repair the roof."
“The need is so great right now. I was speaking with Director Gill and the center is full,” says Joe Schoenstein, Division President for Bright House Networks. “It’s a large number of children especially, and at this time of year we’re just so pleased to be able to support their activities.”
Myvett is thankful for all of the homeless center's help.
"They provide me with anything I need for the baby,” she says. “We had sponsors who came by to bring the baby stuff and kids presents. So, we're very grateful to be here."
The homeless center isn't exactly sure how it'll spend the money, but Gill says it could go to much needed repairs.
