President Obama's new push for gun control has re-ignited the debate over firearms restrictions.

The President has given hope to gun control advocates.  But, his plan has also triggered an increase in gun sales across the nation.

Almost 3,000 miles away from Newtown, Connecticut, gun owners in Bakersfield are rushing to buy more guns. Some fear their time to do so is running out.

At Second Amendment Sports, people have been lining up to buy firearms since Saturday. On Tuesday, sales hit a record high.

"This is just another sport, another part of American History, and it should not be infringed upon," said Keith Foster, General Manager, Second Amendment Sports.

No major federal gun control laws have passed since the 1994 assault weapons ban. President Obama is calling on Congress to reinstate the ban, which expired in 2004.

"Nothing that anyone is talking about for banning firearms is going to prevent crime and it really doesn't go far to solving crime," continued Foster.

Shoppers at Barnes & Noble had different reactions to President Obama's plan to curb gun violence.

"He has to address not only the gun control issue, but why this is happening in our society," said Mark Castro.

"I think we should be able to bear arms, if nothing more than for our own protection," said Reba Lancaster.

"I don't think you need to go out and by an AK and a whole lot of ammunition just so you can protect yourself," said Sierra Spencer.

"We all make sacrifices. This case in Connecticut is becoming all too common and if we can't protect our children, what good are we?" asked Tom Russell.

"People are just not willing to sacrifice. I think if they spoke from my perspective or the 20 children who were slain that day, I think they would have a different outlook," said Wesley Davis, Founder of the Wendale Davis Foundation.

Wesley Davis lost his 16-year-old son six years ago. Wendale Davis was shot to death inside his car.  The killer was never found. Davis said no feeling can match the despair that comes with losing a child.

"I definitely think there should be a ban on all guns period. I think the only individuals carrying guns should be the police officers," he continued. "If these thugs or whoever, would not have been able to possess weapons then perhaps I wouldn't be standing here today."
