BAKERSFIELD, CA - A father and mother have been arrested for charges related to the death of their 3-month-old child, after an autopsy revealed the child was malnourished, dehydrated, and possibly physically abused, police say.
The Bakersfield Police Department arrested 25-year-old Eddie Leyva for murder, felony child endangerment and misdemeanour child endangerment Friday. Police also detained the infant's mother, 30-year-old Vanessa Wolfe.
After interviewing Leyva and Wolfe and conducting an investigation of the scene, they arrested Leyva on murder and child endangerment charges. Wolfe was arrested for felony child endangerment and misdemeanor child endangerment.
Thursday, officers responded to a call of a deceased infant, finding a 3-month-old dead at a residence in the 1000 block of L Street. Police say Leyva, the father, fled the residence with his 1 and 3-year-old children. Leyva was found by police and arrested for two outstanding warrants: resisting arrest and providing false information to a peace officer.
The final findings of the autopsy have not yet been released by the coroner's office, and police say additional charges may be pending for Leyva and Wolfe.
