Tehachapi to adopt controversial anti-bullying curriculum

The Tehachapi Unified School District voted to adopt a controversial bullying curriculum for students in 6th through 12th grades.

In a unanimous decision, board members said students will receive anti-bullying curriculum that includes bullying based on gender and sexual-orientation.

That has some parents upset. The federal government is requiring it after Jacobson Middle Student Seth Walsh killed himself in Tehachapi.

Walsh told family members he was being bullied for being gay.

"I don't believe 10- or 11-year-olds need to learn about sexuality, sexual orientation, sexual harassment," said one concerned parent.

"What I think is special about the curriculum it is very specific to what our community says it is comfortable with, as well as meeting the need of addressing sexual harassment, discrimination, and bullying," said Superintendent Lisa Gilbert.

The new curriculum will be implemented this school year.
