Halloween is full of spooks and surprises, but local fire officials don't want an accidental injury to be part of your celebration.
On Thursday, Kern County fire officials demonstrated some Halloween hazards.
They say it's important to make sure your kids can see well if they are wearing a masks. Or, better yet skip the mask altogether.
Another recommendation: use flameless candles in pumpkins and other decorations to eliminate fire danger.
Firefighters also demonstrated what happens when decorations and costumes catch fire.
"A lot of fires are started because of the open flame, whether it's the kids waiting for trick-or-treat candy or the decorations that are sitting outside. Also be conscious of where you place decorations. They can be next to light bulbs for a large amount of time, and they can also catch on fire," said Eric Coughran, Kern County Fire Department.
Before you buy a costume for your child, check the package to make sure the costume is fire resistant. And, make sure your kids wear bright clothing and carry a flashlight Halloween night.
