BAKERSFIELD, CA - The third local Honor Flight returned to Meadows Field Sunday night with 31 veterans aboard. The program took two Korean War veterans and 29 veterans of World War II to Washington DC to explore the memorials built in their honor and tour the nation's capitol. Everywhere they went, Kern County's Honor Flight vets received a warm welcome.

"We really had a ball," said veteran Bill Kehoe. "All of our chaperons were just top notch."

"There were people everywhere and they were swarmed day and night with people thanking them and people clapping for them," said Lili Marsh with Honor Flight Kern County.

After a whirlwind weekend trip, the vets and their chaperons arrived back at Meadows Field to a hero's welcome. For some, it was the first real homecoming they got.

The program is free to vets thanks to generous donors.

17's Rachelle Murcia was on the flight as well and will share stories from the trip beginning Tuesday.
