MOJAVE, CA - There are rumblings that Sir Richard Branson and his Virgin Galactic team may go supersonic on Monday in Mojave.
Branson is quoted in Tuesday's Las Vegas Sun newspaper that SpaceShip Two will make its first powered flight from the Mojave Air and Spaceport sometime Monday.
Earlier this month, the rocket-powered spaceship successfully completed its 24th test flight, a nine-minute-long glide over the high desert. Here's what Branson told the Las Vegas Sun on Tuesday.
"After this weekend, I'm going to Mojave to be there for our first flight on our spaceship. We're hoping to break the sound barrier. That's planned Monday. It will be a historic day. This is going to be Virgin Galactic's year."
Branson goes on to say SpaceShip Two will be rocketing into space before the end of the year. Virgin Galactic tells us it does not publicly announce flight tests in advance, but will release information once a flight is completed.
Kevin Mickey, President of Scaled Composites, echoed that statement Wednesday afternoon.
Stuart Witt, General Manager of the Mojave Air and Spaceport could not be reached for comment.
