Bakersfield College will forfeit its state football championship as part of its penalty for improperly paying out-of-state student-athletes, the school announced Tuesday afternoon.

The penalty was announced at a news conference late Tuesday afternoon.

It came after an investigation showed the BC booster organization, the Helmet Club, paid six out-of-state athletes for maintenance work done on campus.

The penalty affects only the football program. As part of the punishment, all football wins in the last two years are erased.

The Renegades capped their 2012 season by trouncing San Francisco City College 35-14 on Dec. 8 to win the state championship and end an 11-2 season. That season, and those wins, will be erased from the record books as part of the penalty imposed Tuesday by the California Community College Athletic Association.
