MCFARLAND, CA - Spring time means spring cleaning and that's how some people spent their morning in McFarland.

But they weren't sprucing up their own home, these volunteers painted the rooms of young men living in a group home.

Casa de Ninos is a multi-dimensional treatment facility for 12 boys ages 13-18.

The name means House of Children in Spanish, but volunteers who helped paint the home today made sure the house means a loving home for each of the young men staying there.

Kern Bridges manages Casa de Ninos, which houses boys with broken backgrounds who've experienced trauma in their lives.

"Well we believe all treatment starts with a good environment, clean environment. and to spruce up and to give the boys a home environment that is somewhere they can actually call home," said Robert Carter, Kern Bridges program director.

Volunteers placed a new coat of white and blue paint in each boy's bedroom and the new arcade room.

All the paint was donated by Valspar and the time was donated by a dozen employees from the Lowe's on Rosedale Highway.

For one volunteer, this project was personal.

"We wanted to pay it forward. They helped one of our own so we're gonna help them in return," said volunteer Allison Dinwiddie.

The project was the group's first year volunteering at the home.

They added the home improvement helps them just as much as it helps the young men.

"They are here all the time and so to be able to bring a new bright sense of color into their lives is, I think, going to make an impact on them as well as us. I know all of us are really excited to be here," Dinwiddie said.

The young men who live in the home were out for the day as the work was completed.

Some visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium and others spent their Saturday at Universal Studios.

They'll return home to freshly painted rooms.

BAKERSFIELD, CA.-More agricultural skills will soon be available to Kern County teens. The Kern High School District Regional Occupational Center has opened enrollment for a new program coming in the Fall, along with one revamped program.

The ROC program is now offering a food science class to teach students basic food prep and how food transitions from farm to fork.

Students will turn this one acre dirt lot at the ROC center into a garden, as they learn how to grow vegetable crops and plant fruit trees. The will also develop a green thumb in this green house and turn the science behind growing crops into a business. Vegetables and fruits will be sold at a student-run farmer's market.

Each student will receive a food handler certification at the end of the course, preparing them for higher education or jobs after high school.

Now from food science to computer science, ROC is adding network training to its existing IT Teach course. In addition to computer repair and understanding operating systems, students will now learn how to set up a computer network based on Cisco systems.

Once done, students will receive Accent certification, which is an entry level networking certification. They'll be eligible to work at any business in town which operates on a Cisco network system.

25-30 students will be in each class. They are open to juniors and seniors and any other open spots will be available to the public. Students have a month left to sign up with their school counselor.

Also, ROC will hire an instructor for the food service class in coming months. If you'd like to apply, contact assistant principal Brian Miller at 831-3327. All ROC teachers have prior work experience in the industry in which they teach.

Various questions were asked to the students who helped create this exhibit, shown in the video above.

Women's history month may end today, but this exhibit will be open until the end of June. For more information, visit the exhibit website at https://csubedocent.wordpress.com.

Shannon Grove seeks to reform PAGA

BAKERSFIELD, CA- Assemblywoman Shannon Grove says she is working to amend a law that allows lawyers to sue businesses for minor paycheck stub mistakes.

The owner of Weststar trucking says he is thinking of leaving California after nearly three decades in business.

Last week, Weststar's owner Dan Corriea and Larry Jenkins, who owns B and L Casing in Bakersfield, joined Grove at the state capitol to introduce AB 588.

The bill is designed to close loopholes from 2004's private attorney general act, or PAGA.

PAGA was designed to prevent employers from abusing their employees, but Corriea says lawyers lie about major violations.

"Those are never the items they go into settlement with. that's just to open your books, get into your company, look through every record you've had in the last five years and see if they can find a labor code violation. then they start applying the penalties," Corriea said.

Penalties can be issued for failure to list both the starting and ending pay period dates on a pay stub, failure to include a bank address on the pay stub, and failure to list the company's full name.

Corriea is being sued because his pay stubs simply said Weststar, and not Weststar trucking.

The fines?

One hundred dollars per employee check on the first violation, and $200 per check on every violation after that.

Jenkins who accrued more than $15 million in fines settled for $1.5 million and says he's already making plans to move B and L Casing out of California.

BPD: Man accused of rape and arson also tried to drown victim

BAKERSFIELD, CA- A man who died in an officer involved shooting Friday had raped a woman at a southwest Bakersfield home hours earlier and tried to kill her by tying her hands, dousing her in a flammable liquid and setting her on fire, according to Bakersfield Police.

Adrian Hernandez, 22, raped the woman reportedly his roommate in the home on Tungsten Street, police said.

They say Hernandez turned to the flammable liquid after he had tried to drown the woman in an upstairs bath tub.

After being set ablaze the woman was able to free herself and run from the home.

Hernandez then reportedly set the house on fire.

Later that night, around 10:00 Hernandez was spotted driving in Hart Park.

By then officers had a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of rape.

Police pursued him to Panorama Drive and Union where he crashed his vehicle and was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

Detectives say they recovered a BB gun at the scene which resembled a semi-automatic handgun.

The investigation into the shooting death of Hernandez continues.

Local church and charity work to curb infant deaths

BAKERSFIELD, CA- Many local infants will now rest safer at night thanks to the generosity of a local church congregation.

Bridge Bible Church members collected over 150 portable cribs and other safe sleeping products to help prevent sudden unexplained infant deaths.

Monday night, they donated those items to the Kern County Network for Children.

This after 17News aired in in depth story on this issue last month.

SUID caused 48-percent of infant deaths in Kern County in 2013, according to the Child Death Review Team.

"They may not have the money to purchase a crib so they may have the baby sleep with the parent or an older sibling. And that increases the chance of a baby dying about 40 times. From either the baby being rolled over on or an accident," said Kim Silva of the Kern County Network for Children.

Experts say the best way to prevent SUID is by placing an infant on his or her back in a crib, alone.

City says it will tear down tent city on Union Ave.

BAKERSFIELD, CA- A planned city hearing to discuss a controversial homeless encampment in central Bakersfield has been canceled.

Richard Iger from the City of Bakersfield says the owner of the vacant lot on South Union Avenue has signed a waiver admitting to violating the land use code, which allowed a tent city.

Several dozen people have been living in tents on the property off Daniels Lane.

Administrators had claimed it poses a health and sanitation risk and that city laws forbid camping in a commercial zone.

Now, Iger says city crews will clean out the area and tear down a wall that runs against union avenue beginning in the next couple of weeks, but did not give an exact date.
