BAKERSFIELD, CA - The head of Kern County's Mental Health Department is retiring after a long career with the county. Dr. Jim Waterman has worked for the county for 18 years, serving as the director of Mental Health the last six years.
Prior to his public service, Dr. Waterman was in the Navy. He told 17 News he doesn't know what he will do next, but it will include taking it easy.
"As the leader of a large county department there's sort of one speed and that's full speed, so I just wanted to slow down a bit, have a little more flexibility and the freedom to do some other things with my life," said Dr. Waterman.
Dr. Waterman's last day is January 24th. The Kern County Board of Supervisors is expected to discuss his replacement next Tuesday.
