BAKERSFIELD, CA -- Deputies say they have received several calls about a possible phone scam taking place in the Bakersfield area. Sheriff's investigators say an unknown person has been calling residents and identified himself as Lieutenant Gore from the department's warrant service. The caller would tell the potential victim that he or she would have an outstanding warrant for their arrest and he was giving them the opportunity to pay the fine to avoid arrest.
Deputies say the telephone number the suspect caller is calling from is out of the state of Georgia. The caller is also described as having a heavy southern accent.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to warn citizens to be suspicious when receiving calls from unknown callers. The Sheriff’s Office does not solicit payment for fines by telephone.
If any citizen receives a similar type call they should note the incoming call number, disconnect the call, and immediately report the incident to the Sheriff’s Office.
