BAKERSFIELD, CA -- A man is hospitalized with major injuries after being struck by an SUV Wednesday morning in Oildale, the California Highway Patrol said.
Shane Cody Lewis, 22, was walking eastbound on China Grade Loop, and was in the middle of the street when he was hit at approximately 4:10 a.m., investigators said.
He was struck by a 2005 Ford Expedition driven by William Prough, 75. Prough was reportedly eastbound on China Grade Loop, driving 50 miles per hour when he struck Lewis. Because of the dark roadway conditions and dark clothing worn by Lewis, Prough was unable stop in time to avoid the collision, officials said.
Lewis was transported by ambulance to Kern Medical Center with major injuries. Prough was not injured. China Grade Loop was closed for about one hour as officers gathered evidence. The accident remains under investigation.
