BAKERSFIELD, CA -- The Kern County Board of Supervisors approved at its morning meeting cutting 51 positions at Kern Medical Center and closing two of the county-run hospital's departments.
Kern Medical Center released details of the cuts last week, when they were published on the board's agenda for this morning's meeting.
Some of the cuts include mental health workers and medical support technicians.
The layoffs and closing those two departments, home health services and outpatient physical therapy, are projected to save the hospital around $7.3 million dollars a year.
The cuts will take effect in August.
Also today, Kern Medical Center CEO Russell Judd is in Sacramento, where Assembly Bill 2546 will be heard by the Senate Health Committee tomorrow.
It passed the Assembly May 19 by a vote of 76-0.
The bill would authorize the Kern County supervisors to establish the Kern County Health System Authority to manage, administer, and control Kern Medical Center and for the operation of additional programs, facilities, care organizations, physical practice plans, and delivery systems that may be affiliated or consolidated with the medical center.
We will have more details about Kern Medical Center's cuts, ahead on 17 News at Noon and tonight on 17 News at 5 and 6.
