TAFT, CA -- A local disabled veteran will be able to move around her home more comfortably, thanks to a team of volunteers who performed a number of home repairs.
"I started remodeling this place about four years ago and then, I had a stroke and so, I don't have the right side of my body under control," said Army veteran Virginia Walton.
So to finish where Walton left off, were more than a dozen Home Depot volunteers; who perform basic repairs and modifications to homes and facilities serving veterans with housing needs.
"This is just something that the Home Depot is really passionate about. We loved to go out to the community and help. We're always open to any veteran that needs help," said Amanda Riley, Team Depot Captain.
Walton was a truck driver in the army in the 70s. She then used her GI bill to go to school to become a registered nurse.
She's been at her Taft home for seven years and says she desperately needed these repairs.
On Saturday, volunteers installed $5,000 worth of home equipment including a new front door, kitchen cabinets, toilets and a new faucet.
"Just to get my kitchen done. It will be such a relief to be able to make a dinner and not have to juggle between little counter tops and no counter tops," said Walton.
This the fourth project the local Team Depot group has done.
"I am delighted. I know that it's good people in this world. I'm kind of glad that I found a few," said Walton.
The project is expected to be completed sometime Saturday evening.
If you are a veteran who needs home repairs, call the Home Depot on Gosford Road at 661-835-1133 and ask for Amanda Riley.
