BAKERSFIELD, CA - Future Nobel Prize winners could be right here in Kern County as top students prepare to showcase their work at the regional science fair. Students ranging from 4th grade through 12th grade will be at the Rabobank Convention Center Tuesday with hopes of advancing to the state competition.
Six hundred fifty students are competing for 48 spots in the state finals which will be held at the California Science Center in Los Angeles next month.
County math and science coordinator Edlred Marshall says it's up to the younger generation to advance scientific knowledge.
"All that can be known is not known. One of the things that we're trying to teach our students is a proven method for making discoveries in the natural realm and discoveries are being made all the time," said Marshall.
Judging is based on the scientific thought that went into the project, along with the creativity, organization, effort and motivation. Organizers say students will explain and demonstrate their understanding of the work. They'll be asked about their hypothesis, process, and conclusion.
