Taft theater in trouble

TAFT, CA-- An old movie theater in Taft will fall victim to history if it doesn't modernize enough to play the latest Hollywood movies.

Major film studios are slowly phasing out movies released on film.

The Fox Theater will need to convert it's 35 millimeter film projectors to digital.

However, that will cost $40,000 for a down payment, money the theater isn't bringing in on its own.

Most theaters don't make money off of ticket sales alone.

Theatre staff have to sell popcorn and sodas to make their money and there is a lot of hidden costs into running a movie theater including water, electricity and sewage.

The owners of the Fox Theater in Taft do not own the Fox Theater in Bakersfield.

The Taft theatre had to come up with some creative ways to raise money and joined a website called Kickstarter.com.

"The way it works is there is a pledge system where you can donate one dollar," said Chelsea Coke, manager of The Fox Theater. "But if you want to donate more, like say ten dollars, you get a prize with that."

The website was intentionally started as a way for entrepreneurs to fund their projects.

"It's important that this remains," said Gregory Hill, local business owner.

"This is great for the economy. It provides families a place to get together which is very important -- but in order to do that, we need to now help the theater survive."

If you go to Kickstarter.com, just search for the Fox Theater in Taft.

Since fundraising began on Kickstarter on August 8, the theater has raised nearly $6,000.
