BAKERSFIELD, CA -- A Bakersfield teenager is among three students at San Jose State University, charged with committing a hate crime.

All students are accused of bullying their Black roommate and clamping a bicycle lock around his neck.

Eighteen-year-old Logan Beaschler was arrested Thursday night, but was released on $15,000 bail.

The Santa Clara District Attorney's Office says the two other suspects will most likely turn themselves in sometime Friday evening.

For two days now, dozens of students at the university have marched through campus demanding justice.

"We're outraged, we don't appreciate it and this school has been dragging its feet on this for quite sometime and it's ridiculous," said one student.

Prosecutors say three students have been charged with a misdemeanor hate crime and battery after racially bullying their Black roommate inside their campus suite.

"It was a living environment that was decorated with items of hate," said Erin West, Santa Clara District Attorney's Office.

West says the three students hung a confederate flag inside the dorm room and also gave the victim a nickname based on a slavery reference.

Prosecutors say the harassment began in August and lasted through October.

During that time, prosecutors say the three students put a bike lock around the victim's neck.

"On the first occasion that they locked him up in this bicycle lock, they pretended that they didn't know where the key was and left him to walk around with this bicycle lock on his neck for 5 to 10 minutes," said West.

Campus police said Nazi symbols and photos of Adolf Hilter were also found on a white board.

"It's appalling to think that a young man can go off to college and that this would be his living environment, that he's be forced to live in such a horrific situation and not only be forced to live in it but also be taunted and be physically battered in the process," continued West.

The Santa Clara District Attorney's Office says Beaschler will be arraigned January 6.

If the students are convicted, they face one year in jail.
